Sprial Workshop and Walker

I love the idea of incorporating a study of advertising into the typical curriculum, especially for middle school and high school students. So naturally I was drawn to the "Power of Advertising" unit plan on the Spiral Workshop Curriculum website. In this lesson plan, students are working a la Barbara Kruger to challenge underlying assumptions about culture.

As I was reading over the lesson plan details, I noticed that a connection to the Walker chapter 4 lay in the "choose and issue" section of the lesson. Students are being asked, under the umbrella of advertising and culture, to choose a message to be promoted in their own communities. This is an artistic problem that helps to promote productive working, as Walker discusses throughout that chapter. The idea has been narrowed and restricted enough to help guide students into deeper meaning, while not being so open that some students are lost at sea.
